Frequently Asked Questions About Farts

How many times does the average person fart per day?

The average person farts about 14 times per day, though anywhere from 5 to 21 times is generally considered normal. That works out to roughly 0.5 to 2 liters of gas daily. Men and women fart at broadly similar rates.

Why do farts smell bad?

Only about 1% of fart gas actually smells. The odor comes from sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans, produced when gut bacteria break down proteins and sulfur-rich foods like eggs, meat and cruciferous vegetables. The remaining 99% is made up of odourless gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane.

What foods make you fart the most?

Beans, lentils, dairy products, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts), whole grains, carbonated beverages and foods high in fructose or sugar alcohols are commonly cited as top gas producers. See our guide to gassy foods for details and tips.

Is it healthy to hold in farts?

Occasionally holding in gas is unlikely to cause harm, but regularly suppressing farts can lead to bloating and abdominal discomfort. In most cases it is healthier to let gas pass when you can, in a socially appropriate setting.

Why do some farts make noise and others don't?

The sound depends on the gas velocity, the tightness of the anal sphincter and the amount of gas released. Tighter muscles create higher-pitched sounds, while relaxed muscles produce lower tones. Silent farts usually involve slower gas release. Body position and clothing can also affect the acoustics.

Can you light a fart on fire?

Farts can be flammable because they may contain hydrogen and methane, but please do not attempt this — it can cause severe burns. Not everyone produces methane in their gut, which is why some farts are more flammable than others.

Do animals fart?

Most mammals fart, and cattle are notable gas producers on a scale that has drawn interest from climate researchers. Dogs, cats and horses pass gas regularly. Birds generally do not fart, and most fish have different digestive systems that do not produce flatulence in the same way.

What's the speed of a fart?

Farts are often cited as exiting the body at around 10 feet per second, or roughly 7 mph. The gas quickly disperses in the surrounding air, which is why the smell usually takes a moment to arrive. Temperature, humidity and air circulation all affect how quickly fart smell travels and dissipates.
